Have the Ultimate New York Winter Experience

It is busy, it is bustling, it is even a bit brassy, but New York City winter is also irresistible. Here are some tips to have the best time in New York City this (and every) winter season.

New York City winter lights

Plan Ahead: Do your research and get as many reservations on the books as early as possible. Tables at that new place(s) you want to try, rooms at the hotel in the midst of all the action, tickets to the show(s) you want to see…get it all in advance.

Come Prepared: The previous tip notwithstanding, expect long lines and crowded attractions. Dress in layers and bundle up warmly. It can get mighty cold outside as you visit many of the outdoor attractions, especially those that are prettiest at night.

Turn on the Glitz: Midtown Manhattan is the center of New York’s winter fete. Trek up trendy Fifth Avenue from 40th St to Central Park and see all the lights and glamour. Go to Saks Fifth Avenue’s light display, Tiffany’s dazzling diamonds, and the iconic trees at Rockefeller Center, the New York Public Library, the Empire State Building, Bryant Park, and others.

Make a List: Check it Twice: New York’s winter markets are charming venues worth exploring. They are filled with local artists and designers selling gifts and trinkets that you and your family will adore. Grand Central Terminal holds a unique Holiday Fair, in the stunning Vanderbilt Hall, focusing on socially responsible business and handmade craft gifts.

The wind-down of every calendar year is an exciting time in New York City. Come enjoy the post-Thanksgiving magical air; see the city transformed into a singing, dancing, sparkling Tinseltown.

Summer of 2019: Record Tourism in NYC

Times Square, New York City

Nearly 67 million people came to New York City in the summer months of 2019. That is close to two million more visitors than in 2018. It is also the 10th consecutive year of rising tourism according to Fred Dixon, the chief executive of NYC & Company, the city’s tourism marketing agency.

The surge in New York tourism is likely due to several high profile events, including the NYC Film Festival, WorldPride celebration, City Farm Summer, and others. The reopening of the Museum of Modern Art this month will also draw visitors to the city, Mr. Dixon said.

Those visiting the city are looking to have a good time. They want top-tier accommodations, prime experiences, and reasonable prices. As New York continues to offer a wide range of exciting opportunities, from the culinary to the cultural, the fashion to the fun, hotels like the Edison in Times Square, or the Washington Jefferson Hotel in the theater district and the Iroquois in Midtown offer ideal hospitality close to all the action. Hotel owner Shimmie Horn works hard to ensure that all guests enjoy all that New York City has to offer.

The Newly Renovated Evelyn Hotel

If you’re looking for a luxurious and relaxing NY experience, the Evelyn Hotel, part of Triumph Hotels, is the place to visit.

As of November 14th, the hotel features impressive upgrades after a multimillion-dollar renovation.

The 159 guest rooms at the Evelyn Hotel have been upgraded with new linen, lighting and updated bathrooms. Creative and whimsical decorations such as music notes painted on bathroom tiles are now part of the lovely décor.

The lobby has been transformed with velvet seating and softly lit sitting areas.

The hotel now has three new restaurants by chef Jonathan Benno. One is Leonelli Taberna, a relaxed Roman-inspired trattoria with a bar. Leonelli Focacceria e Pasticceria is a cafe and bakery with a mezzanine-level library. The fine-dining restaurant, Benno, features Mediterranean fare.

Lunch with Leonelli!

Shimmie Horn’s Evelyn Hotel is now serving lunch at the Leonelli Taberna.  Anytime from 12pm you can enjoy the wonderful creations of chef Jonathan Benno who has “had a love affair with Italian food since [he was] a kid.”  Making Italian food today “reminds [him] of eating [his] grandma’s eggplant parmesan. [And it is that ] feeling [that he] want[s] to recreate for guests at the Leonelli Taberna.”

For the full menu, click here. And in the meantime, just dream of the wonderful Stuzzichini and “Taberna Burger” that are just two of the many options.

The Elevation of the Evelyn!

We always knew that the Evelyn was an exquisite hotel featuring great service and wonderful food. But now part of that has been recognized in Grub Street’s Power Rankings, with Leonelli Taberna – chef Jonathan Benno’s creative works – making it to Number 5 of the list!  Here it was described as:

“Former Lincoln chef and one-time Thomas Keller protégé Jonathan Benno is going for a more unbuttoned spirit and Roman-ish food in the newly renovated Evelyn Hotel. Just in time for 90 degree–plus days, there are cold spritzes and a beautifully chilled frutti di mare.”

Yes, the New York weather right now definitely calls for some airconditioned delights!

Nordstrom Rack in Manhattan

Nordstrom Inc. will be opening a Nordstrom Rack in Manhattan. Located at 855 6th Avenue (at the Durst Organization, close to Herald Square), this will be relatively close by to Shimmie Horn’s The Evelyn hotel, set in Manhattan’s NoMad neighborhood. This marks the second Nordstrom store that will be in Manhattan.

According to Durst Organization President Jonathan Durst:

“We are proud to welcome Nordstrom Rack to 855 Sixth Avenue. With 375 rental units, 150,000 square feet of office space and now 46,500 square feet of retail, the building is a perfect reflection of the diversity, energy and connectivity of the NoMad neighborhood. We look forward to many years of success with Nordstrom Rack at 855.”

The off-price retail division of Nordstrom Inc. offers customers a savings of between 30 and 70% from the standard Nordstrom stores.

Krav Maga Comes to Tribeca

martial-artsShimmie Horn’s hotel in the Tribeca area, The Evelyn, is to be getting a new neighbor.  The 158 Franklin address – that until now has been home to the Steven Alan Home Shop – is to become the address for the first Krav Maga Institute in the district.

While Krav Maga has already had a presence in Tribeca (using space at Tribeca Health & Fitness and Church Street Boxing), it has never formally established its very own presence.

But this month all of that changed and by next month, the Krav Maga Institute will be offering a complete schedule to benefit all those in Tribeca.  Over the next few months this will further develop to offer Combat Cardio classes, yoga, and maybe even  Brazilian jiu jitsu and muy thai but all under the auspices of the Krav Maga Institute.  There will also be programs available for the youngsters: from 6 to 13 years of age, kids will be able to get a head start on their Krav Maga training.

The Krav Maga Institute is opening its first full-time space in Tribeca, downstairs at 158 Franklin, the building where Steven Alan Home Shop used to be. Up till now, KMI has been using fitness studios around the city—including Church Street Boxing and Tribeca Health & Fitness—on a part-time basis KMI will be offering soft-opening classes in April, shooting for a full schedule starting in May. By September it plans on being at capacity, with classes in the Combat Cardio program (fitness-based kickboxing), probably yoga, and possibly muy thai and Brazilian jiu jitsu. And there will be a program for kids age 6 to 13. When it’s fully open I’ll stop by for the full report.

Great Steaks

steakIf you are looking for an evening out that includes a delicious steak when you are spending a few nights at Shimmie Horn’s The Evelyn, look no further than Ben & Jack’s Steakhouse. This popular restaurant gives customers the ability to “feel completely at home in an atmosphere so cordially convivial.”

Run by owners Ben and Jack Sinanaj (who are also first cousins) as well as their siblings Harry and Russ, the Sinanajs’ have “devoted themselves to the religion of the NYC steakhouse.” As well it features two bars (with exquisite cocktails), a long dining room and five private dining spaces. It has a classic feel to it, including “ochre-colored walls, dark wood, sturdy chairs, white tablecloths, a wine wall.”

So that’s one new fun way to enjoy a steak in the heart of New York City.

See ‘The Nomad’ when in Nomad!

For those who happen to be visiting one of Shimmie Horn’s luxurious hotels – like The Evelyn (located in Nomad, Manhattan) or the Tribeca Grand Hotel, it could be a good time to take in a show that is appropriate for the area.

“The Nomad” is currently showing at Manhattan’s Flea Theater (located in the TriBeCa neighborhood on 41 White Street) and has to date received rave reviews.

The musical – with book and lyrics and Erin Courtney and Elizabeth Swados – is not for the slow-paced. The production is quite quick and has a lot going on. It combines both musical theater tradition and Middle Eastern sounds, telling the tale of Isabelle Eberhardt, a romantic and Swiss writer who meets her premature death before reaching the age of 30.

Check it out. It’s definitely something different.
