March of Dimes Relocates
Until now, the annual March of Dimes has taken place on Staten Island. This year however, for the first time it will be in Manhattan, in conjunction with their event on Sunday, April 29.
While Staten Island has traditionally been known as one of the region’s “signature fundraising events,” attracting thousands of walkers and raising millions of dollars, it is now going to join the other New York boroughs and (be the last to) join the Manhattan one.
This will mean that the walk will be a five-borough one. A March of Dimes Greater NY Market statement said that this will result in the “mobiliz[ation of] thousands of people from across the metropolitan area.” And as Senior Development even Manager Eileen Hochberg said:
By bringing together local communities, we know we can solve the toughest problems. Evert March for Babies participant is a leader who has the power to make a huge difference for families.

Featuring the Frederick!
Historical meets modern; comfort and convenience; great customer service. These seem to be some of the buzz words that come together with New York Triumph Hotel chain owned by Shimmie Horn. And that was recently mentioned again with a Time Out feature on The Frederick Hotel.
Time Out contributors Céline Bossart and Marion Bernstein in their article entitled ‘The best boutique hotels in NYC,’ described The Frederick as follows:
Originally opened in 1845 as the Gerard House, the Frederick Hotel has seen many iterations and notable guests over the years—it’s rumored that Abraham Lincoln took a snooze in the 1850s and that Vincent Gallo payed just $22 per week in the early 1980s. Now fully remodeled, the reimagined Frederick houses 130 thoughtfully-designed, vintage-meets-minimalist rooms and the three-story Serafina Italian restaurant which offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and in-room dining. 95 West Broadway (888-895-9400, frederickhotelnyc.com).
Shakespeare’s Coming to Town
Bookstore chain Shakespeare & Co. is about to open up in two new locations in New York City: one in Greenwich Village, the other on the Upper West Side. They are to take the same shape as of the existing ones on the Upper East Side but will also feature their very own “Espresso Book Machine,” which is able to print “bookstore-quality paperbacks in the time it takes to brew an espresso, so that any book not in stock can be quickly accessed and printed on the spot.” As well, writers are able to self-publish their works through the machine!
According to company CEO Dane Neller:
My vision for Shakespeare & Co. has always been to create the biggest little bookshop in the world. Each new bookstore should be rooted in the local community and offer a cultural sanctuary where customers can escape from their daily routines, turn off their smart phones, relax, unwind, and indulge in the luxury of reading.
Featuring the Hotel Belleclaire!
Seems like Laurelle – the US influencer and style blogger – enjoyed visiting the Hotel Belleclaire. On her recent visit to New York she visited the Upper West Side hotel located near the Beacon Theatre.
In her blog Belle, she talks of her stay for the first part of fashion week at the Hotel Belleclaire. Describing it as a “lovely boutique hotel,” she commented on the “beautiful” lobby, detailing its “artistic glass chandeliers and luxe velvet couches and chairs.”
But out of everything at the hotel, her “favorite thing” was “being able to wake up and go right down to the lobby for the most delicious cappuccinos and French pastries! [She] love[s] all things French, so starting [her] day with a croissant is a morning-maker! There were so many options and everything we tried was so, so good!”
Thumbs up to a taste of France in the Upper West Side then.
Manhattan Model
With an incredulous attention to detail, an amazing model of Manhattan’s skyline has been created using old computer chips, damaged mobile phones, defective batteries and other such discarded items.
The brain, creativity and implementation behind this is Zayd Menk who worked on the project for around 3 months. through his art class project, the Zimbabwe born 17-year-old fashioned a .0635:100 scale model of Manhattan.
The project used the following:
- 263 hot glue sticks,
- 11 CPUs,
- 27 motherboards,
- 10 CRT monitor motherboards,
- 15 batteries,
- 13 floppy disk readers,
- 4 watches,
- 4 audio cards,
- 3 hard drives,
- 3 graphics cards,
- and 2 clocks to bring the city to life.
Menk explains the inspiration for the project as follows:
“Under my topic ‘Man-made’ I was already studying cities,” Menk tells My Modern Met. I was also studying electronic waste. I’ve always thought that the tiny components on a PCBs [printed circuit boards] look like small cities, so I think It was some sort of subconscious thing that just clicked in my head… I’m absolutely ecstatic that my artwork has gained some attention. Hopefully, it will inspire other artists to come up with some creative ideas.”
Getting Fit While Traveling
Forbes contributor Allison Olmsted recently discussed different ways of staying fit while traveling for business. Over the years business people have spoken about the difficulties staying true to their exercise regime had been. As such a new company – Routinely – is trying to alleviate some of these issues.
But also featured in the article, was Shimmie Horn’s Triumph Hotel Group. Partnering with a flexible class program FitReserve, guests at any of these hotels get access to New York City’s Top Studios. In addition, FitReserve launched an entire new TravelPack option especially for use by Triumph hotel guests.
National Meatball Day
Next week we get the opportunity to celebrate National Meatball Day. But, apart from having spaghetti and meatball (or a similar alternative) for dinner on March 9th, how can one adequately mark this occasion?
In Manhattan, thanks to Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, there is a wonderful way to mark this date. Celebrators can get a special meatball there on March 9 from 11.30am to 10.00pm. And it will be a meatball to remember (which it should be for the $100 price tag which also comes with a glass of 2012 Prunotto Barolo wine).
The meatball is most fancy and is made using the finest ingredients including: Wagyu beef, truffle caciocavallo cheese, foie gras and winter truffles. Rather than traditional tomato sauce it is doused in a creamy shallot and Champagne sauce.
Frederick Feature
Shimmie Horn’s Frederick Hotel was recently featured in the UK’s About Time Magazine. In an article by Angelica Malin article entitled Perfe4ct Weekend 48 Hours in New York, the Frederick was said to be a “vibrant…fantastic boutique hotel in Tribeca.” It was further described as being “home to a 24-hour fitness centre, restaurant and cocktail bar [featuring a] vintage and Art Nouveau style, with flashes of colour and touches of minimalist design, for something rather unique to the area.”
Located at 95 W Broadway, the Frederick also offers a 24-hour fitness room, Pret A Manger and Starbucks in the hotel, Serafina Tribeca (a top Italian restaurant) and its own cocktail bar. Built in 1838 it is one of Tribeca’s “longest-running historic hotels” in the area.
For those booking a suite from now until March 31, 2018, they will receive a $50 American Express Card.
Go Green!!!
For St. Patrick’s Day that is!!!! In New York City Ireland makes a visit tomorrow. Start off with a lesson in history at the Irish Mob of Hell’s Kitchen: From the Gophers to the Westies, whereby you can explore the organized crime history of the city and see where infamous Irish gang members held “office” back in the day.
Later on, you might want to join for the NYC Irish Pub Crawl and enjoy some Celtic dance performances. On this crawl you’ll be able to enjoy the classic Irish An Béal Bocht (which – translated from Gaelic means ‘pour mouth’). As well as your Beer, to satisfy your hunger order the classic Irish breakfast. Because then you can justify beer drinking any time of the day!
For a traditional, classic and historical twist, part of the crawl you’ll enjoy is the McSorley’s Old Ale House. Established in 1854, it is New York City’s oldest tavern and is still today incredibly authentic featuring sawdust-wooden floors, eight-ounce mugs and sharp cheddar and zippy raw onion grub.
And if you want to keep it sober there is always the Sober St. Patrick’s Day event at which you’ll be able to enjoy Irish step dancers, classic food and non-alcoholic beverages. Featuring John Whelan Band, fiddler Dylan Foley and Irish dancing acts, this is about as traditional as you can get for your green-filled-fun day!
